what is dermatitis?
inflammation of the skin
how does dermatitis present?
- pain
- erythema
- swelling
- loss of skin barrier, dry/flaky, crack/fissures
- itch: chronically leads to lichenification
what is the treatment for dermatitis?
- topical mild steroids and emollient
- resistant: phototherapy, systemic immunosuppression or biological therapy (dupilmab)
what type of reaction is contact allergic dermatitis?
- Type 4 hypersensitivity reaction to an antigen
- T cell mediated
what are some common causes of contact allergic dermatitis?
- cleaning products
- metal in clothing and jewelery
what are the investigations and management for contact allergic dermatitis?
- patch test
- avoidance
what is contact irritant dermatitis?
non specific irritation of skin by a substance
what is the onset for contact irritant dermatitis?
-acute (symptoms occur on first exposure)
what is the treatment for contact irritant dermatitis?
avoidance
what is this?
seborrheoic dermatitis
how does seborrhoeic dermatitis present?
-scaly erythematous patches often on the face and scalp
how is seborrheic dermatitis treated?
-treat with antifungal azole
