Mercantile Capitalism

Global exploitation began in 16th century when european merchants set out across the globe, trade routes were established which tied these “discovered” regions to europe with favourable terms for incoming merchants by military advantage and bribery of social elites. Slave Triangle

A

One particularly lucrative route is the slave triangle, over a 200 year period (1650-1850) approx 9 million slaves were shipped across the atlantic. With exchange for goods and weapons to work as cheap labour on cotton/sugar plantations. Frank argued this slavery helped “kick start” Industrial development in the UK as it resulted in tremendous profits, so a super accumulation of capital.

World capitalist system

A

This is characterised by a chain of exploitation which tie poor countries (satellite nations) to richer former colonial powers (Metropolis) The result is that nations “sick the wealth for the satellites. The developed countries have made poorer countries poorer and in there interests too keep them poor. Ha joon Chang metaphor “kicking the ladder away”

Q

Solution

A

The only way out dependency is for an underdevelopment nation to escape from the rather capitalist system. Action would mean isolation from the west and stop trading with developing world.

17
Q

Evaluation

A

Argues that underdevelopment and poverty are not natural highlighting how its human actions.
Doesn’t say its the fault of the countries avoids blaming the victim, blames the rich world.

18
Q

Frank had been criticised

A

As he does not define the term dependency for example canada could be described as a satellite for USA but not developing. Over negative of the relationship of satellite and metropolis.

19
Q

Goldthorpe

A

Argues that most of the worlds economically impoverished are former colonises. Such as Ethiopia, that have not been colonised, he argues that intact they have problems because lack of infrastuctue by colonial power.

20
Q

Solutions?

A

The problem with this is that it fails to offer any realistic solutions apart from vague unattainable longings for isolation.
Getting rid of capitalism is not a realistic solution.

21
Q

Kleptocary

Frank ignores the role of homegrown elites the impact of the poor governance and elite kelptocary in undermining development, this is run by a corrupt government spends AID. e.g. haitian president $800million
