- sensitive (more specific versus general)
- quantifiable (mathematical formula)
- objective (same qualifiers, use of calibration - non-subjective
- accepted (acceptable for patient - child vs adult)

- Type 1: comprehensive using mirror, explorer, lighting, radiographs, study models and diagnostic tests
- Type 2: limited; use of mirror, explorer, lighting and limited radiographs
- Type 3: use of mirror and lighting ONLY
- Type 4: use of tongue depressor and lighting ONLY
