delocalisation Flashcards
Delocalisation
Where electrons are shared between three or more atoms
Why do molecules become less reactive and more stable, the more delocalised atoms are in a molecule?
As the electron density is spread across multiple atoms, therefore the overlapping p-orbitals are more stable as pi bonds can be spread across a larger volume. This lowers the energy= more stable
What is partial pi behaviour?
Where there is an alternating single bond
When does delocalisation across a single sigma not occur?
When there is a presence of two sigma bonds separating two pi systems ( sp3 hybridised carbon ) as no overlap is possible
what is the true allyl cation
hybrid of two resonance forms
what causes a single bond to decrease in length
by increasing the amount of hybridisation around the carbons
