(20) Acids And Bases Flashcards
What is a neutralisation reaction?
A reaction between acids and bases to form water and the salt
Bronsted Lowry Base
Proton acceptor
Bronsted Lowry acid
Proton donors
How is water amphoteric?
Can act as an acid or a base depending on what its reacting with
What is an acid - base reaction ?
When a proton is transferred from an acid to a base
What is the conjugate acid?
The previous base ( the base that gains the proton )
What is the conjugate base?
The previous acid ( loses a proton )
Why can’t you compare acid strength with pH
Because you must take into account concentrations
What does a small ka indicate about an acid ?
Strong acid
What does a small ka indicate about an acid ?
That the acid is weaker
What does Kb mean?
This is the efficiency of a base picking up an extra proton to form the conjugate acid
At room temperature, what does Kw =
1x10-14 mol2mdm-6
What is the relationship between Kw Ka and KB
Kw= KaxKb
pKa < 0 what does this indicate about an acid ?
Strong - most of the acid has deprotonated into an aqueous solution
pKa>0 what does this indicate about the acid
Weak - the acid doesn’t dissociate in an aqueous solution
