(19) chemical equalibrium Flashcards
what is a one way reaction?
Reaction goes to completion, so all the reactants form the products
what is chemical equilibrium?
the reaction doesn’t go to completion, it achieves an equilibrium state. This is when we use reversible arrows
what is a dynamic equilibrium? 3 points
- forward and reverse reaction occur at the same rate
- the concentrations all remain constant
- the reaction continues to happen
why do we not observe any changes with dynamic equilibriums?
as concentrations of both reactants and products remains constant.
how do we define the equilibrium constant?
products/reactants
what is the partial pressure?
the pressure a gas would exert if it were present alone
if Kc»1 where does equilibrium lie and what does the mixture contain
- Equilibrium lies to the right ( because I’m right handed, the right side is»_space;1 )
- Products dominate the mixture
if Kc«1 where does equilibrium lie and what does the mixture contain
- Equilibrium lies to the left
2. Reactants dominate the mixture
what is the reaction quotient (Q) ?
how to determine whether or not a reaction mixture has reached equilibrium
when Q=Kc
the reaction has reached equilibrium - no change in concentrations
when Q>Kc
Initially more products than reactants, reaction shifts to the left to achieve equilibrium
when Q
Initially more reactants than products, reaction shifts to the right to achieve equilibrium
how does Ksp indicate a sparingly soluble ionic compound?
the smaller the value indicates that only a small amount of the ionic solid will dissolve
what is le chateliers principle?
When any external change is made to a system at dynamic equilibrium, the system responds to minimise the change
how does a equilibrium constant change when you decrease/increase concentrations of reactants?
equilibrium constant remains unchanged
