Delegation and Setting Targets Flashcards
What is delegation?
Delegation is where responsibility and/or authority is given to another person (usually from a manager to a subordinate) to carry out certain activities/tasks.
Explain why delegation is important.
Delegation is very important for time management, not only because it helps to develop staff and improve motivation, but because it also saves time and leaves the manager free to get on with more important tasks.
Outline 3 consequences or not delegating.
Often miss deadlines for tasks and their work may not be or the highest standard.
Fail to develop staff, which means that no-one will be able to stand in as deputy if the manager is absent.
Miss out on promotional opportunities.
Outline 2 reasons why some managers do not like to delegate.
They think they can always do the job better themselves.
Their standards are too high.
Why do we set targets?
We can easily measure the success of an organisation.
All employees can understand their role in the organisation.
To keep the employees on tracks and to have something to aim for.
What are smart targets?
Specific - The target must be well defined and state exactly what is required or is to be achieved.
Measurable - It must be quantifiable and be expressed in some form of measurement unit for example, the target is to increase sales by 20%.
Agreed - The target ,use be discussed and agreed with your line manager, especially when preparing your personal development plan.
Realistic - Targets should be challenging but must still be achievable.
Timed - It is important that key dates identify when the target should be completed.
