Deindividuation Flashcards
Research on deindividuation
Anonymous conditions within a group mean people lack awareness of who they are as individuals which makes deindividuation more likely. Zimbardo claimed that anonymity reduced concern for self-evaluation which means individuals can act without regard for societal norms of behaviour.
The nature and process of deindividuation
The nature of deindividuation is a psychological state characterised by lowered self-evaluation and decreased concerns about evaluation by others. This leads to an increase in behaviours that would normally be inhibited by personal or social norms. Deindividuation occurs when individuals are in large crowds with the feeling of anonymity, reduced responsibility, increased responsibility, sensory overload and altered consciousness due to drugs or alcohol. Their inner restraints are reduced and inhibited behaviours are increased.
