Definitions - memory Flashcards
Capacity
a measure of how much can be held in memory - represented in terms of bits of information
Coding
the way information is changed so that it can be stored in memory - visual, acoustic, semantic codes
Duration
measure of how long a memory lasts before its no longer available
MSM
explanation of memory based on 3 different memory stores and how info is transferred between these stores
The CE
monitors and coordinates all other mental functions in working memory
Episodic buffer
receives input from many sources, temporarily stores info then intergrating it to construct mental episode of whats being experienced
PL
code speech sounds in working memory typically involving MR
VSS
codes visual info in terms of separate objects as well as the arrangement of objects
WMM
explanation of memory when used when working on a task
Episodic memory
personal memories of certain events; context, emotions and specific details
Semantic memory
shared memories or facts - knowing that - knowing ice made of water
Procedural memory
memory of knowing how to do things - riding a bike
Interferrence
an explanation for forgetting in terms of one memory disrupting ability ability to recall another
Proactive interference
past learning inteferes with current learning
Retroactive interference
current attempts of learning interferes with past learning
