Definitions Flashcards
Cross-firing
A term confined to pacers, it is when the hindfoot on one side strikes the diagonal fore foot. In other words, crossfiring is forging in the pacer.
Forging
Hitting of the sole or shoe of the fore foot with the toe of the hindfoot on the same side. Forging usually occurs at the slow trot and causes a characteristic “click, click, click” at this gait that usually disappears any faster trot.
Scalping
Hitting the hind leg at the coronet with the toe of the forefoot.
Speedycutting
Hitting the hind leg at the pastern or fetlock with the toe of the forefoot.
Shin hitting
Hitting the cannon or shin of the hind leg with the front toe.
Paddling
Throwing the front feet outward while in flight. This action is associated with the toe-in or pigeon-toed position.
Winging out
An exaggerated paddling observed in high-stepping harness and saddle horses.
Dishing or winging
Throwing the front feet inward while in flight. Dishing is associated with toe out or splayfoot confirmation and is considered serious because it can lead to knee knocking or other supporting leg interference.
Rolling
A defect of wide-fronted horses in which they roll from side to side as they stride. This is a laboring, unpleasant, inefficient type of action.
Winding or rope walking
The twisting of the striding leg around the supporting leg in such a manner that the horse appears to be tight rope walking.
Trappy
The term used to describe a short, quick, high, and often choppy stride.
Pounding
Hard contact with the ground that causes excessive concussion, often associated with straight shoulders and pasterns and typical of a “heavy-going” horse.
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD).
The condition found in growing foals whose joint cartilage does not properly differentiate.
Pandiculation
Another word for stretching.
Four components of plasma.
Water, ions, proteins (serum albumin, fibrinogen, globulin), lipids.
