What are the broad categories of maltreatment?
Abuse and neglect
What is abuse?
Parenting errors of “commission”, it is a threatening input into the system
Something is happening that is not supposed to be happening
What is neglect?
Parenting errors of “omission”, it is a lack of input into the system
A child needs something but it is being omitted from their life
Failure to meet a child’s basic physical, emotional, medical, and/or educational needs
What is physical abuse?
The intentional use of physical force against a child that results in or has the potential to result in physical injury
What is sexual abuse?
Any completed, or attempted, sexual acts, sexual contact with, or exploitation of a child by a caregiver
What is emotional (psychological) abuse
Intentional caregiver behavior that conveys to a child that they are worthless, flawed, unwanted, etc.
What are the different sections of adversity?
High deprivation, low deprivation, low threat, and high threat
Examples: Neglect is high deprivation and low threat while physical abuse is high threat low deprivation, with poverty being all around.
Criticism: Many overlaps and not really representative of what’s going on in the real world
How does the ACE survey measure outcomes?
The more adversity you have the worse the outcomes
How does the dimensional approach measure outcomes?
It goes into the severity of things and separates into different sections, so the outcomes can be different depending on the dimensions
What is parental intent?
Was the act willfully inflicted or was it due to parental ignorance
What do vignette studies tell us?
It tells us that we lack universal, clear, objective definitions. There is also a lot of bias going into decision-making
