Drugs - Thalidomide, EPO Long distance air travel Trauma Immobilisation Major surgery within the last 3/12 Pregnancy, HRT, OCP, SERMs Obesity Comorbidities e.g. stroke, IHF Increasing age Active cancer Past DVT Thrombophilia

Complications
A
PE
Post-phlebitic syndrome - venous hypertension due to venous insufficiency. Usually occurs within 2 years of the acute DVT episode

Clinical Presentation
A
Calf swelling, warmth, pain and erythema
Asymmetric pitting oedema
New dilated collateral superficial veins

Investigations
A
Bloods - D-dimer, FBE, coagulation studies (APTT, INR, platelets)
Imaging - Compression US, contrast CT, lower leg Doppler, ECG

Management
A
Compression stockings
Anticoagulation with either LMWH or heparin/warfarin combination (heparin stopped once INR>2)
