Decision Making Flashcards
Factors we consider when making a decision
Setting; value; experience; knowledge; pre-conceived ideas; reliability; cost; beliefs
4 basic strategies of decision making
- Pattern recognition
- hypothetico-deductive
- algorithims
- unfiltered data collection
Hypothetico- deductive
Deduction (general to specific)
Induction (specific to general)
Seduction (ask someone, fast decision and listen to them)
System thinking
System 1: Rapid, unconscious, retrieval
System 2: slow, conscious, deliberate
Heuristic/analytical versus exemplar thinking
H: System 1 dominant, 2 can step in. May need to slow down to reduce errors
E: System 1 first, if no solution, but system 2 will step in. To reduce errors have to gain knowledge
Simple and complex cases
Simple cases if spend too much time on them, may overthink. Complex do require more reflection and thinking
What non-cognitive factors influence decision making?
Personal (experience, knowledge, beliefs) Emotion Evidence Peers patients Environment financial legal
