Background (what is going on in your life) Affect (how do you feel about that) Trouble (what troubles you the most) Handling (how are you handling) Empathy (that must be very difficult)
REBELS framework
Recognising the issue: Recognise and acknowledge, “wow you’re really angry”, “you are not keen on that idea”
Empathy: Show empathy
Boundaries: Establish boundaries, stand up for them. Say we have practice policy, I can not do this, legally…
Emphasise patients best interests: “It is really important to me that we figure this out”
Language (inclusive): Not divisive (why and but), try we, , both and
Solutions: Focus on these, generate together
Boundaries, agendas and emotions that may present as issues
Be prepared to set your own boundaries and be ready to defend them.
Know your agenda and say it if need be. Clinical and patient
Responding to emotions: emotional response is first, understand why and empathise accordingly
If presented with challenge, ask why such a statement (rascist) is being said?
