Day 7 - APU Fire & LVO Flashcards
ILS critical area is?
Area of defined dimensions about the localiser and glide path antennae where vehicles and aircraft are excluded during all ILS operations.
ILS sensitive area is?
An area extending beyond the critical area where the parking and/or movement of vehicles, including aircraft, are controlled to prevent the possibility of unacceptable interference to the ILS signal during ILS operations.

Why do we wait 3 seconds to select APU start?
To allow the flap to open
Which tank is the fuel for the APU provided by?
Left inner tank
After 3 consecutive APU start attempts, how long must you wait before trying again?
60mins
How long is the shut down period for an APU after air conditioning has been provided?
60-120 seconds
How to shut down the APU immediately?
Press the fire shut off push button
Regarding the APU, what N% will the gauge turn amber?
102%
Regarding the APU, at what N% will the gauge turn red?
107% and it will auto shut down
What’s the ceiling of operation for an APU?
39,800ft (aircraft ceiling)
What’s the max altitude we can do an engine start assist with the APU?
20,000ft
What altitude can we use the APU for wing anti icing?
We can’t ever use it for wing anti icing
What’s the ECB?
Electronic Control Box
It monitors the APU limits, bleed air and start up/shut down sequences
In an emergency on the ground, does the APU auto fire bottle discharge?
Yes
In flight, does the fire extinguisher auto fire bottle discharge in the event of an emergency?
No. We have to do it ourselves
What controls the APU?
The ECB (Electronic Control Box)
How many fire detection loops are there?
- Loop A and B mounted in parallel on each engine and the APU
How many fire detection units are there?
1
If loop A and B detect a fault within 5 seconds of one another, is a fire warning announced?
Yes
If loop A and B detect a fault within a space of more than 5 seconds, is a fire warning announced?
No. An ECAM fault message appears
How many fire extinguisher bottles are there on each engine and where are they located?
2 per engine
In each engine pylon
The T3CAS box is comprised of what systems?
TCAS
TERRAIN
TRANSPONDER
What does a red square on the ND mean?
TCAS RA
What system detects reactive wind shear ?
The FAC
What system detects PWS?
Weather radar
If the ‘fail’ light is off on the transponder, is it working or not?
It is working. It comes on when the transponder fails
At what height does ROW/OPS start functioning at?
400ft AGL
Does PWS work if the weather radar is turned off?
Yes
Below What height AGL does the PWS detect wind shear and microbursts?
Below 2300ft AGL
Below what height AGL does the PWS provide warning, caution or advisory messages on the ND based on radar returns?
1200ft down to 50ft
What are the predictive wind shear call-outs?
“Windshest Ahead, windshear Ahead”
Or
“Go around, windshear ahead”
What are the reactive windshear callouts?
Windshear, windshear, windshear
At what height AGL are FAC reactive windshear warnings available?
At T/O, 3s after liftoff, up to 1300ft RA
At LDG, from 1300ft RA to 50ft RA
How many GPWS modes are there?
5 modes
What is GPWS mode 1?
Excessive Rate of Descent
What is GPWS mode 2?
Excessive terrain closure rate
What does ABV mode on the TCAS mean?
The same as all, except that the other intruders are displayed if within 9,900ft above the aircraft and 2,700ft below
What does BLW mode on the TCAS mean?
The same as ALL, except that the other intruders are displayed if within 9,900ft below the aircraft and 2,700ft above
When would you hear TRAFFIC TRAFFIC
When you get an amber circle on the ND from TCAS
From GPWS mode 2, with excessive closure towards terrain, what warning will you hear?
Terrain terrain
Regarding RAs on the climb out, when will they be enabled? (Uninhibited)
On the descent, when will they be inhibited?
Above 1100ft
At and below 900ft
What is the PREDICTIVE GPWS call-out?
Terrain ahead (ahead is added to the warning in the predictive event)
How many approach attempts can you make?
A max of 2 approaches if there is no significant change to the weather
For LVTOs, what 3 considerations are there?
- Captain must perform LVTO below 400m RVR
- For an LVTO below 400m RVR, the Take-off minima table should be used
- For an LVTO below 150m RVR, but not less than 125m;
3A. Crew must be trained (part D)
3B. High intensity runway centre
line lights spaced 15m or less
apart and high intensity edge
lights spaces at 60m or less
apart
3C. A 90 m visual segment available
from the FD at the start of TO
3D. The required RVR value is
achievable for all relevant RVR
reporting points
Do CAT 2 approaches require a lateral element for “visual”?
Yes
Do CAT 3 approaches require a lateral element for “visual”?
No
When deaccelerating on the runway, if the lights begin alternating red/white, what does this signify?
900 meters to go and the PM will call “900 meters to go”
When deaccelerating on the runway, if the lights turn solid red, what does this signify?
300 meters to go and the PM will call “300 meters to go”. PF will call “check 900” or “check 300” relatively
