data collection part 1 of 4 Flashcards
what are the 3 key steps for data collection
Deciding which variables you (might) need to collect
- which variables MIGHT be required
- which variables ARE important to the question
Consider where to source your variables.
Choose between different sources of the same variable.
what variables need to be collected in a analytical study
exposure
outcome
covariates
what study type removes the need for covariates
RCT
Define covariate
variables that effect the exposure or outcome.
what 3 questions are asked to determine the covariates
what are the likely causes of the exposure
what are the likely causes of the outcome
what are caused by the exposure
Define mediator
covariate which is part of the causal pathway
Define confounder
variable which causes both the exposure and the outcome
Define competing exposure
a variable which affects the outcome.
what are the 3 lists and which type of variable does each include
1) variables causing the exposure- confounder
2) variable causing the outcome- confounder, mediator, competing variable
3) variable caused by the exposure- mediator.
what are the cross tab and DAG used for
determine which variables are relevant.
define DAG
Directed cyclical graphs
Have direction, can only go in that direction.
