DAT bio chapter 11.10 integumentary system Flashcards
The integumentary system has 3 layers:
epidermis
dermis
hypodermis
role of integumentary system
homeostasis, vitamin D production, and
protection from pathogens.
The epidermis is the ____ layer and contains what
top
keratinocytes
What does epidermis provide protection from?
dehydration, UV radiation, and
pathogens.
Layers of the epidermis from top to bottom
startum cornuem stratum lucidum stratum granulosum stratum spinosum stratum basale
Come lets get some beers
Stratum cornuem
Corneocytes (dead keratinocytes) form the outer layer
Stratum Lucidum
dead keratinocytes that are not fully differentiated into corneocytes ( present in palms and soles
stratum granulosum
keratinocytes secrete lamella bodies to form a water barrier
stratum spinosum
important for strength (desmosomes) and immunity (langerhans cells)
stratum basale
precursor keratinocyte stem cells proliferate here.
location of dermis and function
under epidermis and supports the epidermis and cushions against injuries.
Dermis contains what 2 layers
papillary dermis (more superficial and thin, high surface area) and
the reticular dermis (deeper and thick, made of
dense irregular connective tissue).
What is hair made of?
keratin. generated from hair follicles
what makes hair stand up/
erector pili muscles
Sudoriferous (Sweat) glands consist of:
- Eccrine glands (sweat glands)
located on the entire body surface
and are important in
thermoregulation.
2. Apocrine glands are located at specific sites and secrete into a hair follicle. They produce earwax (ceruminous) or milk (mammary), depending on their location.
