Q

Outline inheritance as the fertilization of gametes as the basis of inheritance:

A
  • Eukaryotes reproduce sexually to pass genes to offspring in gametes.
  • F and M gametes have an equal number of chromos so M and F have equal genetic contributions.
  • Meiosis is required to halve the chromo number of a diploid cell.
  • Diploid cells have an equal number of each autosomal gene.
  • Fusion of male and female gametes produces a zygote and body cells are produced by mitosis.

Q

Outline the steps of cross-pollination:

A
  • Cut off anthers from the ‘‘female’’ parent, BEFORE POLLINATION.
  • Enclose the flower in a bag for storage.
  • allow the stigma (F) to mature and transfer pollen from M anthers.
  • wait for the pollen to germinate and the eggs to fertilize, where they can be collected as seeds.
