D3.2 Inheritance Flashcards
1
Q
Inheritance
A
The fusion of haploid gametes to form a diploid zygote.
2
Q
Outline inheritance as the fertilization of gametes as the basis of inheritance:
A
- Eukaryotes reproduce sexually to pass genes to offspring in gametes.
- F and M gametes have an equal number of chromos so M and F have equal genetic contributions.
- Meiosis is required to halve the chromo number of a diploid cell.
- Diploid cells have an equal number of each autosomal gene.
- Fusion of male and female gametes produces a zygote and body cells are produced by mitosis.
3
Q
Why can pea plants self-pollinate and self-fertilize?
A
They have male and female gametes.
4
Q
Outline the steps of cross-pollination:
A
- Cut off anthers from the ‘‘female’’ parent, BEFORE POLLINATION.
- Enclose the flower in a bag for storage.
- allow the stigma (F) to mature and transfer pollen from M anthers.
- wait for the pollen to germinate and the eggs to fertilize, where they can be collected as seeds.
