D3 Flashcards
What are the steps of IPB
Define the threat
Describe the environmental effects on operations
Evaluate the threat
Determine the threat COAs (MLCOA / MDCOA)
What is the purpose lf mission planning?
Translate the commanders vizualization into COAs
Define planning
The art and science of understanding a situation, envisioning a desired future, and laying out effective ways of bringing that future about.
Helps leaders understand situations, develop solutions to problems, direct, coordinate, and sync actions, prioritze efforts, and anticipate events
Planning helps leaders determine how to move from the current state of affairs to a more desired future state while identifying potential oppurtunities and threats along the way
What is key terrain?
Geographical feature that if held provides a marked advantage for friendlies or enemies
What is the difference between on order and BPT?
O/o: has recourses allocated towards and planning has been conducted
BPT: no resources allocated and has not been planned yet
What are the War Gaming Methods?
Belt: AOs are divided in well defined cross compartments, used with phase lines
Avenues in depth: used by armor or maneauver units when canalized terrain inhibits
Box: focuses on essential task, best for time constrained planning, good for non contigious AOS
What is required for war gaming?
Action: initiate the event, timeline adjusted to reflect start
Reaction: to event that initated
Counteraction: determines requirements to counter threat elements reaction (how we could have prevented their reaction)
When conducting COA comparison, what is each COA compared against?
A set of evaluation criteria provided by the commander
3 types of orders?
OPORD: a directive issued by the commander to subordinate commanders for the purpose of effecting the coordinated execution of an operation
FRAGO: an abbriviated form of an OPORD issued as needed after order to change or modify that order or to execute a branch or sequel to that order
WARNO: a preliminary notice of an order or action that is to follow
Common planning pitfalls
Attempting to forcast / dictate events too far in the future
Trying to plan in too much detail
Use of a plan as a script for execution
Institutionalizing rigid planning methods
