Q

what is outcrossing?

A

-> purebred breeding without inbreeding.
-> outside 4 generations.

*Grading up of poor quality stocks.
-> By outstanding males
-> Goal: fixation of characters by prepotent males.

  • Mating like to like: only similar phenotype, different genotype.
    -> Poor fixation (A form of selection).
  • Mating unlike to unlike: better to avoid, not advisable. exception: for gene refreshment.

Q

what is crossbreeding?

A

◦ Between different breeds or species crossing to produce new breeds.
◦ Good for gene refreshment.

Examples:
‣ Bengal (wild cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) x Abyssinian).
‣ Ocicat (Thai x Abyssinian).
‣ Pixie-bob (bobcat, lynx rufus x domestic cat).
