D18: . Basics of feline breeding (goals, use, breeds, breeding methods), FIFE classification Flashcards
what is a moggery?
Moggy: domestic cat, non-pedigree
what is a cattery?
cattery: where cats are kept & bred
what is a pedigree cat?
Pedigree: line of descent of purebred cats
what are the uses of cats?
- Companionship
- Hunts and protects from pests (i.e. mice and rats)
what are the goals of cat breeding?
increase or continue with gene refreshment
what are cat breeding methods
1) purebreeding:
A) inbreeding
B) linebreeding
C) outcrossing
2) crossbreeding
what is inbreeding?
-> Close, moderate.
->Inbreeding is production of offspring from mating of individuals that are closely related genetically
-> Character fixation
-> Prepotency (homozygous ), selection inevitable.
what is line breeding?
mating of close relatives
‣ Repeated backcrossing
‣ Based on a prepotent male
‣ Father — offspring resemblance
‣ Father — son substitution
what is outcrossing?
-> purebred breeding without inbreeding.
-> outside 4 generations.
*Grading up of poor quality stocks.
-> By outstanding males
-> Goal: fixation of characters by prepotent males.
- Mating like to like: only similar phenotype, different genotype.
-> Poor fixation (A form of selection). - Mating unlike to unlike: better to avoid, not advisable. exception: for gene refreshment.
what breeding method is used to gain character fixation?
a combination of inbreeding and like to like breeding is the most effective method)
what is crossbreeding?
◦ Between different breeds or species crossing to produce new breeds.
◦ Good for gene refreshment.
Examples:
‣ Bengal (wild cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) x Abyssinian).
‣ Ocicat (Thai x Abyssinian).
‣ Pixie-bob (bobcat, lynx rufus x domestic cat).
where can heterosis/ hybrid vigor occu?
may occur in line breeding and species crossings
what is top mating?
- Top quality individuals: prefer mating with outstanding animals (top mating).
how many cat breeds are known?
approx. 30 - 50
how are cat breeds classified?
