What is the purpose of an assessment?
Allow instructor to identify deficiencies
Provide feedback to student
Develope ADM and judgement skills by helping student evaluate themselves
What are some characteristics of an effective assessment?
An unbiased objective
Flexible - fit the students needs
Acceptable - student must be willing to accept it
Comprehensive - addresses strengths and weaknesses
Organized
Thoughtful - consider the students feelings
Specific - student should have no doubt of details, performance or instructions
What is a traditional assessment?
This generally refers to a written test (FAA written tests) and is god for factual knowledge.
A good written test is reliable, valid, usable (easy to give and grade), objective (graded the same by all), comprehensive (samples the objective being measured), and discriminatory (detect small differences in achievement of students).
What is an authentic assessment?
The student is asked to perform (performance test) a real world task. The student must rely on skills they’ve learned to generate a response. The ACS/PTS is a good example of this.
What is a collaborative assessment?
A four step method, typically used during post flight, that includes:
Replay - replay lesson
Reconstruct - student identifies what they could’ve done different
Reflect - student develops insight from reflecting
Redirect - student relates lesson to past experiences
What is an oral assessment?
Oral questioning. This helps reveal instructors training methods, checks students retention, reviews material already presented, maintains interest, emphasizes important points, identifies points that need more attention, checks comprehension, and promotes participation.
What are the characteristics of an effective question?
Must apply to the subject
Be brief and concise
Be adapted to the students ability and experience
Center on one idea
Present a challenge to the student
What type of questions should be avoided?
Yes or no questions
Puzzles
Oversize - too broad
Toss up - multiple correct answers
Bewilderment
Trick question
Irrelevant
What are the type of critiques?
Student led - student lead critique
Small group - divide class into groups
Student critique by another student
Self critique - student critiques themselves
Written critique
