Cytology Flashcards
Fine-Needle Biopsy
used to collect samples from skin, lymph nodes, internal organs
Aspiration method
requires needle and syringe
Nonaspiration method
capillary/stab technique; uses just a needle
Centesis
includes thoracocentesis, cystocentesis, arthrocentesis, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) taps, and abdominocentesis
Transtracheal and Bronchial Washes
evaluations of mucous secretions from the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles and in differential diagnosis of inflammation, neoplasia, mycosis, and bacterial, and protozoal disease
What are the different types of Romanowsy stains?
Wright’s stain, New Methylene Blue, Gram staining, Eosin stain
Wright’s Stain
used for cytological specimens
New Methylene Blue
used to view nuclei and mast cell granules
Gram Staining
used for bacterial agents (purple = positive, pink = negative)
Eosin Stain
used for sperm
Macrocytosis
increased nuclear size
Anisokaryosis
variation in cell size
Multinucleation
multiple nuclei in a cell
What cells are seen during proestrus?
parabasal, intermediate, superficial cells
What cells are seen during estrus?
all cornified superficial cells
