Background
One of the poorest countries in SE Asia
- Military government that rules the country so restricted access by foreigners (dont like ‘outsiders’ interfering)
- They rely on primary exports like oil, timbers and rubies but have poor roads and railways so can’t explit their natural resources

Causes
Low pressure systerm formed in the Bay of Bengal, tropical strom formed with ocean temps 27oc (deep water 60 m) and warm moist air
- fast rising warm air creates low pressure- the ye of the storm - which sucks in air. Totating winds absorb the moisture from the oceans, creating cyclones
What speed did winds reach
217 kph with torrential rain and storm surges as the sea gets pushed up the Irrawaddy delta
Effects
Sewage systems collapsed, causing food contamination in the rich fields,
- Electric lines broke, roads swept away, dirty water- causing diease and mosquitoes carring malaria
- Sea level rose and flooded fields

UN says 102,000 people killed + 22,000 died HOWEVER Burmese govermenment claims that 22,000 have died

Human response
International relief agencies had to wait several days for permission to enter Burma so they could take much needed aid to hundreds of thousands of victims of cyclone nargis
Military Junta
Barred foreign journalists from entering the country and expelled one BBC resporter state media said therefore more food air could have been given out, more medical supplies ect
many say military juna caused many more deaths then was necessary
Human rights abuses….
Some aid was given in Urban areas and not Rural areas perhaps they wanted to preserve the prestige of the country? show that they didnt need anyones help?
LEDC problem
Lack of information no shelters build no satellite technology to predict cyclones emergancy response not good enough lack of medical facilities
