What is the culture?
Culture is the knowledge, language, values, customs, and material objects that are passed from person to person and from one generation to the next in society.
what are two categories of culture?
Material culture and non-material culture
What is material culture?
consists of physical and tangible creations that members of a society make, use, and share.
What is non-material culture?
abstract or intangible human creations of a society that influence people’s behavior
What are the two forms of language?
There are two forms of language which are verbal-spoken language and non-verbal language - written or gesture.
What are values?
Values are collective ideas about what is right or wrong, good or bad, and desirable or undesirable in a particular culture.
Describe American values?
Americans value individualism. Individualism means independence and self-reliance. Americans express themselves more openly because they value their own opinion. They believe they are responsible for their own success and failure by what they do rather than blaming situational factors.
What does “mutually exclusive” mean?
they are separate, can not be merged
What are taboos?
There are some serious norms that if you violate them, serious consequences may ensure.
What is cultural diversity?
the wide range of cultural differences found between and within nations
Another phrase for a highly diverse society?
heterogeneous societies >< homogeneous societies

Distinguish between high culture and pop culture?
- High culture patronize things like fine arts, opera, or ballet
- Pop culture or popular culture consists of activities, products, and services that appeal primarily to members of middle and working classes such as sports, movies, rock music.
What are the two forms of popular culture?
- A fad is a temporary, short-lived thing or activity followed by a lot of enthusiastic people
- A fashion lasts longer than a fad. It’s a valued style of behavior, thinking, or appearance.
