a social category used to classify humankind according to common ancestry or descent and reliant upon differentiation by General physical characteristics such as skin colour, eyes, hair type, stature, and facial features
NOT CONSIDERED CULTURE
Ethnicity
group or community; identification with a shared heritage, culture, language, or religion
members feel a sense of identity
Visible minority
applies to persons who are identified according to the Employment Equity Act as being non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour
what is “culture”?
A way of life of a group of people, the behaviours, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, and are passed along by communication and imitation
Culture is not static or homogenous
multiculturalism
a heterogeneous society in which diverse cultural world views can coexist with some general characteristics shared by all culture groups and some perspectives that are unique to a particular population
subcultures
a smaller group of people living within the dominant culture who have adopted a cultural lifestyle distinct from that of the mainstream population
examples of “othering”

ethnocentrism
a belief that one’s own culture should be the norm and is considered better
stereotypes
generalizations about a group

treating others unfairly on the basis of their group membership

a way of distancing “them” from “us”
racism
specific actions and as attitude whereby one group exerts power over others on the basis of either skin colour or racial heritage
