Asepsis and Infection Control Flashcards
pathogens
microorganisms that at capable of causing disease
nosocomial infections
an infection acquired after admission to a health care facility
most common serious complication of hospitalization
communicable (contagious)
an infection that can be transmitted from one person to another
immunocompromised
patients who have an impaired immune system
chain of infection
requires: infectious agent, reservoir, exit route, method of transmission, entrance, and host
infectious agent
bacteria, viruses, fungi, protazoa
characteristics of infectious agent
sufficient number of organisms viability/virulence invasiveness host susceptibility resistance
carrier
an animal or person who show no symptoms of illness but who have pathogens on or in their bodies that can be transferred
direct contact
actual physical contact between source and susceptible host
indirect contact
contact with contaminated indirect object, like linen, equipment, dressings
droplet transmission
large particles from the respiratory system of an infected source propelled up to 1m through the air and deposited onto a susceptible host
airborne transmission
organisms contained within droplet nuclei or dust particles
suspended in air for extended periods
air currents transmit these particles long distances and susceptible host inhales them
vehicle transmission
a single contaminated source, like water, drugs, food, equipment, transmits infection to multiple hosts
vectorborne
insects or pests transmit microbes to humans
serous fluid
sanguineous fluid
sero-sanguineous fluid
purulent fluid
serous: watery
sanguineous: bloody
sero-sanguineous: both watery and bloody
purulent: thick/puss
exogenous infection
arise from microorganisms external to the individual that do not exist as normal flora
endogenous infection
occurs when some of the patients flora become altered and overgrown results
normal flora
mixture of bacteria normally found at specific body sites
medical asepsis
clean technique
involves procedures and practices that reduce the number and prevent transfer of pathogens
surgical asepsis
sterile technique
includes practices used to render and keep objects and areas free from microorganisms and spores
