Define competence
The ability to exert control over one’s life, to cope with specific problems effectively, and to make changes to one’s behavior and one’s environment, as opposed to the mere ability to adjust or adapt to circumstances as they are.

Define and give example: Unconscious incompetence
We assume/attribute things we don’t know without even realizing it
Ex. wearing your shoes in a Japanese house without realizing it’s offensive

Here, we realize there is a difference in values but we don’t fully understand it
Ex. you don’t understand bull fighting but you realize it’s entertaining for the spaniards
Define and give example: Conscious Competence
You recognize others have different values than you and shift your behaviours to align with them
Ex. you realize Muslim women don’t shake hands so you know this and therefore don’t shake their hand
Define and give example: Unconscious Competence
We are all consciously competent in our own cultures; we know the values without even being aware of it
Ex. we know what to wear to weddings and funerals
