USA refused to recognise Castro and stopped trade

April 1962: Cuban exiles invade Cuba
Within two days they were killed/captured.
USSR stepped up military aid to Cuba.
Made Kennedy not trust the CIA.
Missile crisis
October 1962
U2 spy plane took pictures of nuclear missile bases in Cuba.
Kennedy announced naval blockade despite his generals want for war.
Khrushchev said missiles for defence purpose, same as US missiles in Turkey.
Khrushchev agreed to turn missile convey back.
Kennedy said he would remove missiles in the next six months and would never attack Cuba.
Who won the Cuban Missile Crisis
Kennedy stood up to Cuba but was careful not humiliate USSR.
Castro remained in power for nearly 50 years.
Khrushchev appeared loser and was overthrown by members of the politburo in 1964.
No nuclear war!
