America In Korea Flashcards
End of ww2
North = soviet troops. Governed by communist leader Kim (2) sung South = Americans. They put in place anti communist leader Syngman Rhee
Korea had been ruled by who till when
Japan 1945
Invasion
Northern troops invaded the south in summer 1950
Southern forces didn’t stand a chance so the troops were pushed into a small corner of South East Korea called the Pusan Peninsula
American response
Truman saw it as an example of how communism would spread if the USA did nothing
- Truman sent advisers, supplies and warships to Korea
- Appealed to UN
- At time USSR was boycotting UN over wether communist china should be recognised as a country. This meant the US could pass a resolution for intervention without objection
- So a UN force intervened in Korea ( mainly made up of US troops)
- Troops were put under control of general MacArthur (an American)
September 1950
UN troops ashore at Inchon and South Korean troops advance from Pusan. Within weeks North Koreans pushed past 38th parallel
After 38th parallel achieved
MacArthur pressed on towards China
Despite warnings from China if UN forces got too close to the border they would intervene, the UN forces kept going
Late October 1950
200,000 Chinese troops joined the North Koreans bring modern weapons supplied by the USSR
Un forces were quickly pushed back into the south
Conditions were poor with snow storms engulfing the fighting
Chinese were used to this whilst the Americans were not.
Was Korea a success
Yes as it showed they could contain communism
But showed the limits of containment policy and the USA/UN were embarrassed at how they were pushed back by the Chinese
Many in America felt the US has showed weakness for not going for an all out victory using nuclear
March 1951
MacArthur openly and publicly threatened to invade China maybe with nuclear
Truman outraged at public contradiction
In April removed MacArthur
Was containment not roll-back
June 1951
Peace talks began after fighting reached a stalemate
Armistice signedq
July 1953
