- resp illness characterized by stridor & hoarseness resulting from inflammation in the larynx & trachea

- viral
- MC: parainfluenza type I
- fall/winter
- could be bacterial

- direct inhalation
- contamination

What is the hallmark of croup?
A
- Steeple sign (tracheal narrowing in subglottic region) on CXR
- barking cough

What is the presentation of croup?
A
- gradual onset but progress 12-48hours
- nasal irritation, congestion, & coryza

What are the symptoms of croup?
A
- fever
- hoarsness
- barking cough
- stridor

What does an inspiratory stridor indicate?
A
- upper airway obstruction

- lower airway obstruction

A
- symptomatic
- humidified air
