What is a crisis?
A
- A time-limited condition (period of disequilibrium will last from 4-6 weeks).
- An intolerable situation that must be resolved. - High intensity of distress present.
- Has the potential to cause harm.
- Coping mechanisms are overwhelmed.

Crisis intervention = dual opportunities:
A
- resolve the crisis and emotional difficulties that arise from it.
- Resolve other problem issues which may have contributed to or be related to the crisis, but have been previously ignored or denied.

…brief, intense, is oriented to restoring coping skills to the client, and requires the social worker to function effectively in emotionally difficult circumstances.

Summary of steps in crisis intervention:
A
- Assist to alleviate tension through ventilation of feelings.
- Create a relationship of trust and a climate of hope.
- Reality checking with the person (problem not over generalised).
- Person and worker collaborate on small step goals for restoring equilibrium.
- Introduction of new skills for coping to be tested out by the person.
- Termination of relationshup when sufficient coping skills have restored the person’s autonomy.
- Balance compassion and empathy without creating dependency.

- Gather information.
- Analyse and make sense of information to assess.
- Make a professional judgement based on analysis. Consult with others.
- Manage risk.
