Crisis/Emergency Management Procedures Flashcards
When do you use Crisis/Emergency Management Procedures?
Follow specified CPI (crisis prevention intervention) protocol for responding to behaviors that are potentially dangerous, that require physical restraint/transport, or are unusual and intense.
When is it permissible to use CPI (crisis prevention intervention)?
CPI physical management procedures are only to be used when:
1) specifically written into a client’s plan or
2) when there is imminent risk of danger.
If not specified in the plan, use of physical management techniques must be documented in an incident report.
CPI techniques should only be used as trained and should not be implemented by anyone not certified.
Define Blocking.
Using your body or other environmental barriers to stop/interrupt the opportunity for a behavior to occur. This does not include any behaviors that restrict a client’s movement.
i. e.
- Putting your hand in front of your face to stop a projectile from striking you
- Turning the student’s chair such that the wall creates a barrier to eliminate elopement from the table
Define Restraint
Physically restricting part or all of a person’s movement.
NO form of physical restraint can be used without written plan and consent.
i. e.
- Holding child in Interim Control Position (c)
- Using a buckle on a high chair to keep a baby from falling out
- Physically holding hands down at a person’s side so they are unable to hit
What are the requirements to use any form of restraint?
1) specific criteria for use included in behavior reduction plan
2) specific procedures for what form of restraint is appropriate (must be least restrictive form expected to be effective)
3) signed consent of parents/guardian
Define Crisis
Situation or condition in which the client, family member or staff are in imminent risk of physical harm.
i.e.
Client is attempting to use knife as a weapon against mom
Client is violently banging head into cement floor and is severely aggressive when attempts are made to block the behavior or insert pillow for safety
