Creating order from chaos Flashcards
In what ways can we classify animals?
Anatomy, physiology, behaviour, morphology, ecological niches, evolutionary pressures
What is a monophyletic group?
Group of organisms that consist of all he descendants of a common ancestor
What is a polyphyletic group?
Group of organisms that is given a formal taxonomic name (e.g. endothermic)
What is a paraphyletic group?
Descended from a common evolutionary ancestor but not includng all the decendent groups. (e.g. ectotherms)
What is a root in a cladogram?
Common ancestor
What is an intemode in a cladogram?
Ancestral species
What is a node in a cladogram?
Speciation event
What is stabalising selection?
WHen animals have a more mean range of a single trait becomes more common overtime in a population
What is disruptive selection?
Selective pressure is favourable to the two extremes (e.g. Darwins finches)
What is adaptive radiation?
To radiate out from a central ancestor
What is directional selection?
Evolution moves in a given direction
