Cranial nerves Flashcards
Patient has hoarseness what nerve is damaged? What exam finding would you have?
CN X vagus: recurrent laryngeal n. Uvula deviation (deviates away from Lesion)
Patient presents with difficulty swallowing and dry mouth. What nerve is damaged?
CN IX: glossopharyneal n.
Where are the cell bodies of the facial nerve?
Geniculate ganglion in facial canal
repeated middle ear infections destroyed the tympanic plexus in the middle ear. Which cranial nerve could be damaged and what symptom would occur?
CN IX, diminished production saliva by parotid gland. The nerve leaves the tympanic cavity via lesser petrodollars n. and synapse in optic ganglion.
Nerves tested in corneal reflex?
CN V and VII
CN V damage effect corneal reflex how?
Stimulate Lesion side= no blinking either side
Stimulate intact side= both eyes blink
CN VII damage effect corneal reflex how?
No blinking will occur on damaged side regardless of side stimulated
Vestibular schwannomas symptoms?
CN VIII damage: ipsilateral sensorineural deafness
CN VII damage: deviation tongue on protrusion, impaired taste ipsilaterally, corneal desiccation due to inability to close eyelid, drooling and loss nasolabial fold ipsilaterally, increased ossicular chain movement
Patient has pain near lower lip and chin. What nerve is involved and which foramen does it exit?
Trigeminal neuralgia (CN V3) exits via foramen ovale
Gag reflex is controlled by what nerves?
CN X vagus and CN IX glossopharyngeal
Dorsal root ganglia and autonomic ganglia arise from what and have what inside them?
Arise from neural crest cells and are a part of PNS.
DRG: cell bodies of sensory neurons
Autonomic ganglia: synaptic junctions between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons
What is the name of the parasympathetic ganglion that CN III oculomotor n. synapses in?
Ciliary ganglion
What is the name of the parasympathetic ganglion that CN X vagus nerve synapses in?
Intramural ganglia
What is the name of the parasympathetic ganglion that CN VII facial nerve chorda tympani synapses in?
Submandibular ganglion
What is the name of the parasympathetic ganglion that CN IX glossopharyngeal nerve synapses in?
Otic ganglion
