Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What is the origin of the trochlear nerve?
dorsal midbrain
What are the 4 autonomic ganglia associated with the trigeminal nerve?
1) Ciliary
2) Pterygopalatine
3) Submandibular
4) Otic
What is the function of the facial nerve?
1) motor to muscles of facial expression
2) Motor to posterior belly of digastric and stylohyoid
3) Taste from anterior 2/3rds of tongue.
4) Parasympathetic to all glands but parotid (lacrimal, submandibular,
sublingual)
*Parotid innervated by glossopharyngeal
What is the function of glossopharyngeal nerve?
1) swallowing
2) parasympathetic to parotid
3) tast from post 1/3rd of tongue
4) sensory from oropharynx
What is the function of the Vagus nerve?
1) muscles of pharynx and larynx
2) parasympathetic to thoracic and GI tract
3) taste from epiglottis / palate
What is the function of the accessory nerve?
Motor to Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
What cranial nerves contain autonomic fibres?
1) oculomotor (sphincter pupillae of eye)
2) Facial (salivary and lacrimal glands)
3) Glossopharyngeal (parotid gland)
4) Vagus (thoracic and GI tract)
What cranial nerve is associated with the ciliary ganglion?
The oculomotor nerve goes via the ciliary ganglion and V1 of the trigemminal to supplie automic fibres to the sphincter pupillae
What cranial nerve goes via the Pterygopalatine ganglion?
The facial nerve goes via the pterygopalatine ganglion and V2 of the trigemminal in order to supplie autonomic fibres to the lacrimal glands.
What cranial nerve goes via the Submandibular ganglion?
the facial nerve goes via the submandibular ganglion and V3 of the trigemminal nerve in order to provide autonomic innvervation to the submandibular and sublingual glands.
What cranial nerve goes via the Otic ganglion?
The glossopharyngeal nerve goes via the Otic ganglion and V3 to supply autonomic innervation to the parotid gland.
