clinical pain Flashcards
Where do non-opiods act?
Non-opiod analgesics such as NSAIDS / COX2 inhibitors actsperipherally.
Where do Opioids act?
Opioids act at 2 sites in the spinal cord.
- presynaptically pain signal transmission is reduced.
- postsynaptically membrane is hyperpolarised, decreasing the probability of action potential generation.
What type of pain are NSAIDs effective on
mainly nociceptive
What type of drug is paracetamol and where does it act?
Paracetamol is a non-opioid analgesic.
Paracetamol acts centrally.
What strength of opioids are tramadol and codeine?
weak
What strength of opioids are morphine and oxycodone?
stong
What opioids should not be used in renal failure?
Morphine or codeine because the sedative metabolites accumulate.
where do spinal opioids act?
dorsal horn of cord
What is neuropathic pain?
spontaneuous pain and hypersensitivity to pain in association with damage to or a lesion of the nervous system.
What does drug therapy for neuropathic pain include?
- antidepressants
- anticonvulsants
- opioids
