CHECK
Obtain consent for child
Check for responsiveness-if not call for help
If facedown roll over to face up-keep head, neck, and back in a straight line.
To get consent for an unconscious child ask parents, if its life threatening consent is implied. If for an adult, if unconscious, consent is implied.
CALL
To get help from 911, if it’s an infant, care before calling.
CARE: opening the airway
Make sure person is on back. (First step)
Establish open airway by head tilt chin maneuver
-one hand on forehead
-two fingers on body part of chin
-slowly lift head with chin
-do this slower and less tilt for child
CARE: breathing
Check for steady breathing for less than ten seconds.
Clear breathing: visible chest rising and falling, listen and feel for escaping air.
Gasping and irregular breathing is not effective.
If irregular breathing pattern, care for person as if they are not breathing.
CARE: adult: breathing
If adult is not breathing, check for severe bleeding, then chest compressions.
CARE:child:breathing
If not breathing, do two rescue breaths, check for severe bleeding then care.
CARE: child: rescue breathing
When giving first two rescue breaths use breathing barrier.
Tilt head back, lift chin up. Then pinch the nose shut, complete the seal over the mouth, and blow gently for one long second. This should make the chest clearly rise and fall. If not, retilt head and try with a second rescue breath.
CARE: child: vomiting
Airway can be blocked so tilt person onto their side and use fingers to clean mouth.
CARE:child:unconscious and breathing
Maintain open airway with head tilt chin lift maneuver until EMS arrives.
CARE:child:inability to maintain open airway
Modified hands recovery position: move person to side, keep head, neck, and back in a straight line, and keep the knees bent. If needed to leave the scene, modify the position by tucking the chin under the head.
Check:call:care: infant
Check, call, care. Check for consciousness, call 911 if not. Open airway with head tilt chin maneuver. Care to child and wait for EMS.
