SAMPLE to interview responsive person
S-signs and symptoms, question person of discomfort
A-allergies and causes of reactions, whether they are life threatening
M-medication, when last taken and the name of
P-pertinent medical conditions
L-last food or drink-when, what, and amount
E-events leading to incident, what happened and what he or she was doing.
How to check each body part systematically
Check and feel for signs of injury.
See if person feels pain or discomfort,
Check how the skin looks and feels,
Don’t ask the person to move head, neck, or spinal injury.
Take note of medical ID card -worn around neck, ankle, or wrist.
HEAD AND NECK: scalp, face, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and neck.
SHOULDERS: check shoulders
CHEST AND ABDOMEN: chest and abdomen, ask person to take breath and exhale.
HIPS: check hips, pain in hips.
LEGS AND FEET: check each leg and feet
ARMS AND HANDS: each arm and hand, wiggle fingers and hands
Care for any conditions formed.
If showing signs and symptoms of injury, call 911 and care according to conditions. Be alert to worsening condition.
If no apparent signs, rest in comfortable position watch for changes in condition.
