Verify person is choking.
Ask them to talk. If persons able to speak or is coughing forcefully, encourage person to keep coughing be prepared to give first Ariel if person is unable to speak or coughs weakly, send someone to call 911 and obtain and AED and first aid kit. Obtain consent
Give five back blows
Position self to side and slightly behind person. Place one harm diagonally across persons chest for support and bend person forward at the waist upper body should be as parallel to the ground as possible, strike person firmly between shoulder blade with heel of the hand five times.
Give five abdominal thrusts.
Have person stand up straight, stand behind person with one foot in front of the other for balance, wrap arms around persons waist. Using two fingers, find persons navel and with other hands make fist and place thumb side against persons stomach, right above fingers. Cover fist with your hand. Pull inward then upward to give five abdominal thrusts.
Continue giving five back blows and five abdominal thrusts until
Person can cough forcefully, breathe. Person becomes unresponsive. If person becomes unresponsive, lower to ground and start CPR. Check for object in threat after compressions by opening mouth, remove if seen. Never out fingers in mouth unless object is seen.
How to modify for child
Same as adult except alternative to back blows, depending on child’s size, you may have to kneel.
