CPR Flashcards
What is the time frame to start chest compressions after you recognize a cardiac arrest?
10 seconds
Push hard and fast.
What is the compression rate?
100-120 per min
adult - What is the depth of compressions?
5 cm (2 inches) for adults
after each compression, what do you need to allow for?
complete chest recoil
what should you minimize during chest compression?
interuptions.
try to limit it to 10 seconds
define an effective breath
chest rise
Adult BLS for healthcare providers
when looking for breaths and checking a pulse, how long do look?
10 seconds
Adult BLS for healthcare providers
pulse felt but breathing is not normal, what do you do?
rescue breathing
1 breath every 6 seconds for 10 breaths/min
check pulse every 2 minutes
compression-ventilation ratio without an advance airway?
adult 1 rescuers?
adult 2 rescuers?
30:2

adult - compression-ventilation ratio with an advanced airway?
100-120 compressions per minute
1 breath every 6 seconds (10 breaths per min)
child - compression-ventilation ratio with an advanced airway?
100-120 compressions per minute
1 breath every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths per min)
infant - compression-ventilation ratio with an advanced airway?
100-120 compressions per minute
1 breath every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths per min)
children - what is the compression depth?
at least 1/3 the depth of the chest, 5 inches (2 cm) for children
infant - what is the compression depth?
at least 1/3 the depth of the chest, 1.5 inches (4 cm) for infants
adult CPR - hand placement?
2 hands on the lower half of the breastbone (sternum)
children CPR - hand placement?
2 hands or 1 hand (small children) on the lower half of the breastbone (sternum)
infant CPR - hand placement?
1 rescuer = 2 fingers or 2 thumbs in the centre of the chest, just below the nipple line
2 rescuers = 2 thumbs encircling hands in the centre of the chest, just below the nipple line.
If the rescuer cannot achieve the recommended depth, it may be reasonable to use the heel of one hand.
adult - FBO
1 ask are you choking?
2 abdominal thrusts
3 repeat until effective or unresponsive
children - FBO
1 ask are you choking?
2 abdominal thrusts
3 repeat until effective or unresponsive
infant - FBO
1 cannot make any sounds or breathe
2 give 5 back slaps and then 5 chest thrusts
3 repeat until effective or unresponsive
when do you stop CPR to check for a pulse?
after 2 minutes
pregnant cpr
what is the difference between non-pregnant?
roll/wedge the victim onto the their left side
continuation of high-quality CPR with attention to good ventilation
lateral uterine displacement to relieve pressure on major vessels in the abdomen to help with blood flow
rapid initiation of emergency medical services to direct care and early transport to the appropriate facility
Pediatric BLS for healthcare providers
normal breathing pulse felt but it is less than 60
what do you do next?
CPR
Infant BLS for healthcare providers
normal breathing pulse felt but it is less than 60
what do you do next?
CPR
