Counseling Families, Diagnosis, and Advanced Concepts Flashcards

1
Q

what is positioning and what family counseling theory typically employs it?

A

A type of paradoxical intervention when a helper accepts the client’s predicament and exaggerates its condition; an internal challenge to the catastrophizing of the client (ie, by exaggerating the client’s fear to a point where the client can take a new perspective and begin to deal with reality rather than emotional reality construction). This is called positioning.

“it’s possible your depression is hopeless and you’ll never get over it.”

  • Strategic family therapy (paradoxical intervention)

Q

What is TWA?

A

Theory of Work Adjustment by Rene Dawis and Lloyd Lofquist

TWA posits that the person must fit the job (i.e., the correspondence or congruence between the individual and the work must be high) in that the work must meet the needs of the person.

In other words, the relationship works both ways. Higher work satisfaction generally results in greater productivity. Work adjustment is basically the match between the expectations of the employee and the expectations of the place here she’s working.
