Correlations Flashcards
What is correlational analysis?
A technique that measures the strength of the relationship between two quantitative variables
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable increases the other variable increases as well
What is a negative correlation?
As one variable increases the other variable decreases
What can the strength of a correlation vary between?
The strength of a correlation can be between -1 and 1
What is the strength of 0 mean?
0 means that there is no correlation
What does the strength of -1 mean?
-1 means that there is a strong negative correlation
What does the strength of 1 mean?
1 means there is a strong positive correlation
What is a strength of correlational analysis?
- Allows psychologists to establish the strength of the relationship between two variables and measure it precisely
- Allows researchers to investigate things that could not be manipulated experimentally for ethical or practical reasons
What is a weakness of correlational analysis?
Correlational analysis cannot demonstrate cause-and-effect, we can’t tell which variable influences the other
It may be that a third unknown variable influences both
What relationships can correlation measure?
Correlations can only measure linear relationships and cannot detect curve linear relationships
