Controlled Drugs Flashcards
Drug - DEFN
A drug is any substance that when taken into the body alters its function
1 Killer of Canadians when it comes to illicit drugs
Fentanyl
Psychological Dependance
Develops through consistent and frequent exposure to a stimulus
Physical Dependancy
Body has adapted to the continuous presence of a drug
7 Drug Categories
1 - Central Nervous system Depressants 2 - Inhalants 3 - Dissociative Anesthetics 4 - Cannabis 5 - Central Nervous system stimulants 6 - Hallucinogens 7 - Narcotic Analgesics
CNS Depressant
Include:
- alcohol, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, anti anxiety medications, antihistamines
Symptoms of CNS Depressant
Include:
- drowsy, uncoordinated, sluggish, slurred speech, disorientation
Inhalant
2
Two types: 1 - Volatile Substances and Aerosols 2 - Anesthetic Gases Examples include: - gas, glue, lacquer, hair spray, whipped cream canisters, nitrous oxide, paint thinner
Signs/Symptoms of Inhalants
Flushed face, confused, nausea, lack of muscle control, bloodshot eyes, intense headache, uncommunicative
Dissociative Anesthetic
Dissociative: disconnect of the mind and body
Anesthetic: numbness to pain
examples include: Ketamine, PCP, DXM - cough syrup (Triple C)
Signs/Symptoms of Dissociative Anesthetic
hallucinations, blank stare, confusion, repetitive speech, unpredictable behaviour, risk of self harm
CNS Stimulant
- is a drug that speeds up brain activity
Examples of CNS Stimulant
Examples include:
- Cocaine, Meth, crack cocaine, Caffeine, Weight loss drugs, Bath Salts, ADHA drugs (Ritalin/Aderall)
Signs/Symptoms of CNS Stimulants
- talkative, bizarre behaviours, anxious, insomnia, runny nose, sweating, muscle tremors, restlessness, excited
Hallucinogens
DEFN
- a diverse group of drugs that alter perception, thoughts and feelings, cause hallucinations
Examples of Hallucinogens
Examples include:
- LSD
- MDMA
- Magic Mushrooms
Signs of Hallucinogens
Dilated pupils, sweating, nausea, paranoia, dazed appearance, hallucinations
Narcotic Analgesic
- is a drug that relieves severe, acute and chronic pain
Narcotic Analgesic Examples
- heroin, morphine, methadone, oxycodone, fentanyl
Opiate Classifications (3)
Natural, Semi-Synthetic, Synthetic
Natural - occur naturally, within the poppy plant (Opium, Morphine, Codeine)
Semi-Synthetic - by chemically modifying substances from natural sources (Heroin)
Synthetic - produced entirely by chemical reactions in a lab (Meth/Fentanyl)
Signs/Symptoms of Narcotic Analgesic
Drowsiness, pinpoint pupils, slow movements, incoordination, itching, track marks
Cannabis
- a plant used for medical or recreational purposes, main drug is THC
Signs/Symptoms of Cannabis
- Red/blood shot eyes, increased appetite, possible paranoia, relaxed inhibitions
Synthetic Cannabinoids
- a class of chemicals that are different from THC that also bind to the same receptors mimicking the effects
Examples of Synthetic Cannabinoids
- Spice, K2
Poly Drug Use
- when a person uses a combination of different drugs
- can cause a combination of effects
- the more drugs that are acting on the CNS at the same time produce only more complicated and detrimental effects on performance EX - cocaine cannot be used to sober up someone who is drunk, however it can be used to help people stay up to drink longer/more
