Control of Reproduction Flashcards
Testicles
Two small egg shaped, found in scrotum beneath penis
Ovaries
Two small oval shaped, found on either side of uterus inside lower abdomen
Corpus Luteum
Temporary collection of cells (composed of scar tissue) that forms on ovaries every menstrual cycle after ovulation –> degenerate after few days unless woman is pregnant
Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
Made in hypothalamus; targets anterior pituitary to release FSH and LH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Made in anterior pituitary; targets testes to stimulate sperm production, and ovaries to stimulate egg production
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Made in anterior pituitary; targets testes to stimulate release of testosterone, and ovaries to stimulate release of estrogen and stimulate production of corpus luteum
Estrogen
Made in ovaries; targets all cells; maintains secondary sexual characteristics and function of ovaries
Testosterone
Made in testes; targets all cells; maintains secondary sexual characteristics and function of testes, and supports sperm development
Progesterone
Made in corpus luteum; targets ovaries; prepares uterus (specifically uterine lining) for pregnancy, prevents further ovulation, and maintains placenta if pregnancy occurs
