Control of Blood Glucose Concentration Flashcards
1
Q
What is blood glucose concentration monitored by?
A
PANCREAS
2
Q
What happens if the blood glucose levels are too high?
A
- Pancreas secretes insulin
- Insulin causes glucose to move from blood into cells
- Insulin causes excess glucose in the liver and muscle cells to convert to glycogen for storage
3
Q
What happens if the blood glucose levels are too low?
A
- Pancreas secretes hormone GLUCAGON
- Glucagon causes GLYCOGEN to be converted into glucose and released back into the blood
4
Q
What is type 1 diabetes?
A
- Pancreas fails to produce enough insulin
- So blood glucose levels are very high
- Normally treated with insulin injections
5
Q
What is type 2 diabetes?
A
- Body cells no longer respond to insulin
- Carbohydrate controlled diet, exercise regime are common treatments
- OBESITY IS A RISK FACTOR FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES
