Contras and Precautions Flashcards
What are the precautions for the minimum protection phase for a THA?
- Use of heavy resistance exercise loads can cause “micromotion” of femoral prosthesis and potential loosening of the prosthesis
- Avoid high impact activities, and movements that impose heavy rotational forces of the limb
What are posterolateral THA precautions?
- Avoid excessive hip flexion past 90 degrees, limitation to 60 degree preferred
- Avoid hip ADDuction beyond neutral
- Avoid hip IR beyond neutral
What are anterolateral THA precautions?
- Avoid hip extension beyond neutral (hyperextension)
- Avoid hip ABduction beyond neutral
- Avoid hip ER beyond neutral
What are the precautions for hip hemireplacement?
Same as THA (posterolateral approach most common)
What are the precautions for subcaptial femoral neck fractures?
Same as THA
What are the precautions for an intertrochanteric femoral fracture?
NONE!
What are the precautions/contras for ACL sprain or reconstruction?
- Avoid resisted open chain terminal knee extension (ie SAQ)
- Avoid closed chain knee flexion from 60-90 degrees
What are the precautions/contras for PCL sprain or reconstruction?
- Avoid resisted open chain knee flexion (ie Hamstring curls)
What are the precautions during the moderate protection phase after a patellofemoral surgery?
- Avoid exercise against heavy loads due to increased patellofemoral joint compressive forces
- Avoid exercise in positions that would increase compressive forces of the patella (60-90 degrees of knee flexion)
What are the precautions for non-operative management of meniscal tears?
- Avoid deep squatting >90 degrees of knee flexion or stain in pain free range
What are the precautions for surgical meniscus repair?
- Limit flexion to 120 degrees
2. Avoid full squats
What are the precautions for a meniscectomy (partial or total)?
- avoid progressing too quickly
2. High impact activities should be added and progressed carefully
