Uses:
1) Breastfeeding
2) Migraines WITH aura
3) 3-6 weeks postpartum
4) Uncontrolled HTN
POP missed dose:
≥ 3 hours, use backup for 48 hours
Xulane patch
1) Higher Estrogen
2) Less effective > 198 lbs
3) CI > 35 years smokers
Placement: upper arm, buttocks, stomach, upper back (NOT breasts)
DMPA (Depo-Provera)
medroxyprogesterone SQ/IM injection
SQ/IM q 3 months
ADR: osteoporosis
Continuous contraception

Estrogen ADRs / BBW
1) Bloating

3) Early spotting = increase estrogen
BBW: Contraindicated
1) > 35 years smokers
2) VTE / Hx CAD
3) Cancer: breast, ovarian, liver

Drugs that decrease hormonal contraception
Rifampin (requires backup x 6 weeks after d/c)
Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Topiramate, Lamotrigine
St. John’s Wort
Starting COC
Takes 7 days (backup)
Starting POP
Takes 48 hours (backup)
COC 2 missed pills
Take most recent missed pill, then take next dose as scheduled
1) If on Week 3 = Omit Hormone-free week
2) Back up x 7 days
3) Emergency Contraceptive OK

2nd) Menopur, Follistim AQ, Gonal-f, Ovidrel (SQ/IM)
