Context and Cross - Cultural Communication - Hall's Model Flashcards
Context and Communication
Communication always takes place in context, but the relevance or impact that context has for understanding the message varies across culture
High Context Cultures (emotional)
The meaning of the message is highly dependent on the non – verbal communication, the environment and the situation
Communication is highly internalised. Less use of explicit words.
Homogeneous cultures that share values and have common mental frameworks
Low Context Cultures (factual)
Most information is contained in explicit codes as words. Listener must be told practically everything because of the lower importance on non-verbal communication
Heterogenous cultures. Cultures that divide social, personal and professional life. Different mental frameworks.
