content analysis lecture Flashcards
explain Billiq’s critique of social identity theory?
implies racism is a necessary evil
> limited account of cognitive processes underlying identity formation
> implies ingroup/outgroup comparisons hardwired- inherent in thought/language- prejudice as inevitable.
> “assumes the inevitability of prejudice, while ignoring the phenomenon of tolerance”
> emphasizes categorisation, ignoring the equality important cognitive processes of particularization.
> ignores the role of social context in shaping the categorization process.
Biliq studied……
billiqs analysis of the content of national front publications (1978)
> billiq analysed 2 national front publications “spearhead and Britain first”
> coded and counted up the frequency of occurrences of particular values.
Adorno’s authoritarian personality theory would predict?
high authoritarian but LOW freedom and determination important, emphasis on strength and discipline.
> few references to violence but frequent references to racial purity within the national front publications.
HOWEVER, GREATEST EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON RACIAL PURITY AND NATIONALISM
anti-Semitic refers to
emotional dislike of jews
anti-Zionist refers to
reasoned opposition ( world conspiracy)
how do groups sustain positive self-esteem in their in group (sustainable prejudice) -
they introduce new distinction between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. Thus creating a new ‘worse’ category they can distance themselves from and offering protection from social devaluation and critiscm.
biliq argued….
it is prejudice leading to categorization NOT categorization causing prejudice.
