Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1898)
Magistrate of British East India Company. Felt as though there was a gap between modern science and Islam, new science of “theology” was important and necessary. About how Islam was being treated in British India.
Key follower of Khan was Iqbal, who argued that there was a need for a seperate state for Muslims to combat the tension between the muslim minority and the hindu majority in India.
Who is Muh Abduh
Active campaigner against European Imperialism at the end of the 19th century.

- Doesnt view Sunnah as a source of Law, only saw a portion of the hadith as authentic.

He believed in a return to the first sources, to counter the threat of imperialism and enlightened thought on islam and the ummah. -
- inspired the Salafiyya movement (coming from Salaf (the first three gens from muh) ( People that were closest to Muh, a rejection of general Sunnah and Hadith).

Renewal was occuring within muslim communities, and reforms were being charged at a large scale.
